Six Sigma Training Offered Through ACC

For individuals, organizations and businesses, who desire an exceptional standard of performance and demand top results, Six Sigma training has been an important tool for many for over 20 years.
Successful companies, such as Motorola, GE, Dow Chemical and more, as well as small businesses, organizations and school districts, have used the system's principles to eliminate defects and streamline operations in order to maximize customer satisfaction, cost-effectiveness and profits.
"One of the major benefits of the Six Sigma methodology and process is found in the selecting, prioritizing and releasing of timely projects that can be targeted for areas of specific organizational concern regarding their desired business results as stated in the strategic plans," said Dr. Charles Wilson, president of Six Sigma Doctor and author of Six Sigma Development.
Through an innovative partnership with Six Sigma Doctor and the Virtual College of Texas (VCT), Alvin Community College is now making this training available in an interactive, blended learning format for distance education or live classroom setting. "Since the program is offered through the Virtual College of Texas and ACC, people can feel confident that they will receive the best training available," Sara Bouse, with workforce development at ACC, said.
"The training was top quality and very in-depth," Ted Mitchell, who works for a leading oil industry service provider and was certified in Six Sigma during the first class offered at ACC in January. "He (Wilson) was able to give practical and real world applications - and he was able to give us the tools needed to validate our real business needs."
According to Mitchell, the training has already impacted his company and career. "We were looking to expand the supply base and justify the need," he said. "(Using Six Sigma principles) we came to the conclusion that we needed to add 20 additional suppliers to handle a yearly loss of about $54 million." "We had the orders, but we couldn't get them through our internal mechanisms in our supply base," Mitchell added. "We're now in the process of adding suppliers to the supply base as needed to meet our needs." "It (Six Sigma) actually helped stimulate our growth and business," he stated.
There are different levels of Six Sigma training, including Black Belt and Green Belt for project managers, with each one providing unique tools. "Black or Green Belt Project Manager's execution of quality performance improvement projects typically bring $100,000 to $1,000,000 to the organization's bottom line," Wilson said. "Each project manager can execute three to four projects annually."
Six Sigma training not only benefits companies, it has been shown to benefit individuals, as well. "Black Belt Project Managers earn, on average, six figure incomes and Green Belt Project Managers typically earn $75,000 plus benefits," Wilson stated. Mitchell partly credits his Six Sigma training to recently being promoted from a supplier quality engineer to a proposal analyst II at his company.
Traditionally, earning Six Sigma certification was an expensive endeavor. In addition to bringing a high level of quality to the Six Sigma course, the partnership between Six Sigma Doctor, ACC and VCT has been able to make the training more affordable than ever. "One of the things we've been able to do as a joint partnership is use the blended learning approach to drive the cost down," Wilson mentioned.
According to Bouse, people can literally save thousands of dollars by earning Six Sigma certification through the college instead of private consultants. The blended learning approach also gives students schedule flexibility to complete the course when it is convenient instead of losing valuable work time.
If in-person instruction is preferred, companies and organizations can contract ACC to provide Six Sigma training on-site or for groups at the main campus or Pearland Center, as well. Open classes will also be offered in the fall. For more information about Six Sigma training at ACC, contact Sara Bouse at (281) 756-3790.
